Open-End Fund, Closed Fund, Mutual Fund
Open-End Fund
The majority of mutual funds are open-end. By continuously selling and buying back fund shares, these funds provide investors with a very useful and convenient investing vehicle.
It should be noted that when a fund's investment manager(s) determine that a fund's total assets have become too large to effectively execute its stated objective, the fund will be closed to new investors and in extreme cases, be closed to new investment by existing fund investors.
Closed Fund
Generally, current shareholders in a closed mutual fund are permitted to continue investing in the fund, but sometimes they are also be precluded from making additional investments.
A closed mutual fund should not be confused with a closed-end fund. This type of fund has a fixed number of shares, generally invests in specialized sectors, and is structured and listed as a stock on a stock exchange.
Mutual Fund
One of the main advantages of mutual funds is that they give small investors access to professionally managed, diversified portfolios of equities, bonds and other securities, which would be quite difficult (if not impossible) to create with a small amount of capital. Each shareholder participates proportionally in the gain or loss of the fund. Mutual fund units, or shares, are issued and can typically be purchased or redeemed as needed at the fund's current net asset value (NAV) per share, which is sometimes expressed as NAVPS.
